Services This Week

Friday, Feb. 24: Erev Shabbat services, led by Ken Zimmerman, will begin at 8:00 p.m., followed by an Oneg Shabbat sponsored by Shomrei Torah Sisterhood.

Saturday, Feb. 25 Shabbat morning services will begin at 9:30 a.m., and will feature a D’var Torah by David Edelson. Services will be followed by a Kiddush lunch sponsored by Dan Markel and Wendi Adelson, in honor of their wedding anniversary.

Camp Shalom Kickoff

Sunday, Feb. 26 Camp Shalom, a local Jewish day camp for pre-K – 8th grade (sponsored by the Tallahassee Jewish Federation) has been serving Jewish children and their friends for 15 years now! 9th – 12th graders can be counselors. Join us as we celebrate with a Kick-Off on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 12:30 pm at Temple Israel in the gym. Everyone and their friends are invited as we want everyone to know who doesn’t know how awesome Camp Shalom is and why it is such an amazing camp! Free pizza, drinks, door prizes & camp-like activities being served! We will have information available about our upcoming summer session scheduled for June 4-8 and June 11-15. Mishloach Manot Orders Due Next Week

Wednesday, Feb. 29 Due date for Mishloach Manot orders (order form to be found in Shomrei Torah bulletin or at the synagogue)

Ladino Music Concert Scheduled for March 1

Thursday, March 1: At 7:30 p.m., Shomrei Torah will host Dr. Rivka Amado for a musical performance and educational program on Ladino music and Sephardi culture. Dr. Amado, based in Berkeley, has performed at numerous venues, and will be accompanied by local jazz phenom, Zach Bartholemew. A reception will follow the program. You can learn more about Dr. Amado at www.Rivkamusic.com. (In addition, Dr. Amado will meet with our Religion School students on Wednesday evening, Feb. 29.)

Rabbi Hersh Visit and Other March Events

Friday, March 2  Rabbi Jordan Hersh will visit Shomrei Torah. At 6:30 p.m., we’ll have a pot-luck picnic dinner outside in Shomrei Torah’s back yard. Please bring either a pareve (non-dairy / non-meat dish) or dairy dish to share (no meat, please), and we’ll enjoy everyone’s cooking in the great outdoors. It is permissible to bring food prepared in a non-kosher kitchen. Please label dishes that are dairy, for the benefit of those who cannot eat dairy products. No desserts, please (we have a delicious dessert oneg after services!) Don’t worry about the weather – we have hired a tent in case of rain.

Saturday, March 3  Shabbat morning services will begin at 9:30 a.m., and will include the naming of Charlotte Leah Toole, daughter of Deborah and Sean Toole, and granddaughter of Vicki & Bill Kaufman. Services will be followed by a Kiddush lunch sponsored by Vicki and Bill Kaufman, in honor of the naming of their granddaughter.

Sunday, March 4  Annual Purim Carnival. Men’s Club is providing lunch and we’ll enjoy games and Sisterhood’s famous hamentashen. You don’t want to miss it!

Wednesday, March 7  We invite everyone to join in the celebration of Purim at 7:00 p.m. and to hear the reading of the Megillah. Please wear your costumes and join in on the fun. The service will be short and child-friendly, with an ice cream social to follow.

Sunday, March 11  Annual Jewish Food and Cultural Festival featuring Shomrei Torah’s fantastic falafel booth!

Services This Week

Friday, Jan. 27:  Erev Shabbat services, led by Susan Bodell, will begin at 8:00 p.m., and will be followed by an Oneg Shabbat sponsored by Sandler and Barbara Dickson, in honor of the yahrzeit of Lillian Levy.

Saturday, Jan. 28:  Shabbat morning services, featuring a D’var Torah by Susan Bodell, will begin at 9:30 a.m., and will be followed by a Kiddush lunch sponsored by Carol Chenoweth and Ray Chambers.

Following services, we will have a participatory study session, led by Tallahassee Jewish Federation’s new regional Network Consultant, Rachel Alexander. 

A graduate of the Solomon Schechter Day School of RI, Rachel was president of Hillel at Brown University.  Rachel worked as a Bronfman Fellow at Hillel International and was the Assistant Director at the Jewish Women’s Archive in Boston.  She returned to graduate school at Columbia University, where she pursued a Masters degree in Public Administration, and she has worked for the UJA Federation of Northern New Jersey for the past 5 years. 

Upcoming Events

Sunday, Jan. 29: PJ Library Inaugural Event

Children ages 6 months to 6 years are invited to come join us from 3:00 – 5:00 for the inaugural PJ Library event at Shomrei Torah. We will have activities, books, and, of course, snacks to introduce you and your children to this wonderful program.  Any Jewish child from six months to six years old can be enrolled in the PJ program to receive free, age-appropriate Jewish-content books and music CD’s each month in the mail.   If you haven’t signed your child up yet, go to: www.pjlibrary.org and click on “Communities.”  For more information, contact Vicki Gordon Kaufman at vkaufman@kagmlaw.com .
