Tisha B'Av

We observed Erev Tisha B'Av on August 9 with a solemn service at Shomrei Torah. This day, the saddest in the Jewish calendar, marks the destruction of the Temple and many other tragic events in Jewish history. We read the Book of Lamentations (Eicha). We thank all of the attendees for making this service so meaningful, including: Barb Abrams, Barbara Dickson, Sandler Dickson, Dave Edelson, Lee Ann Gustafson, Irwin Kantrowitz, Dwight Kingsbury, Jon Lyons, Dora Schreiber, Loren Schreiber and David Snyder, We particularly acknowledge Barb Abrams and David Snyder for sharing thoughtful insights on this Holy Day.

Federation Teen Intiative

Federation is launching a new Teen Philanthropy Initiative in an effort to bring together teens from throughout the local Jewish community. The Initiative is intended to strengthen teen identification with their Jewish heritage. It also will, hopefully, help teens use Jewish values to respond to community needs. I’ve attached four documents: 1) a letter introducing the Initiative; 2) a flyer; 3) an application form; and 4) an addendum to the application that requests insurance and emergency contact info, etc. Please share this information with teens that you think might be interested in the program. The deadline for applying to participate is September 8.  Download the form .

Keep Sunday, August 17, open for the annual Shomrei Torah annual Membership Brunch.  Look to future announcements for the time of the brunch.  This is also the day to register for religion school and the adult education class.
