Shomrei Torah Announcements for the Week of Feb. 5-11, 2012

Friday, Feb. 10:

WHO: Shomrei Torah USY (TallahUSY 9th- 12th grade)

WHAT: FRO-YO FRIDAY

WHERE: Fuzions Frozen Yogurt- Thomasville location

WHEN: Friday February 10th from 2:30-3:30pm

WHY: TO HAVE FUN!

Friday, Feb. 10:  Erev Shabbat services, led by Sean Ehrlich, will begin at 8:00 p.m., followed by an Oneg Shabbat sponsored by Irwin Kantrowitz and Elaine Harris, in honor of their 15th wedding anniversary.

Saturday, Feb. 11:  Shabbat morning services, featuring a D’var Torah by Richard Morris, will begin at 9:30 a.m., and will be followed by a Kiddush lunch sponsored by Carol Chenoweth and Ray Chambers.

Saturday February 11: Free Wine & Cheese Tasting Fund Raising Event to Benefit local PJ Library Program, 5:00 – 7:30 pm at Temple Israel

The Tallahassee section of the National Council of Jewish Women is sponsoring this fundraising event to raise money to provide free monthly books to all Jewish children in our community, up to the age of 6, who enroll in the PJ Library program.  There will be a silent auction featuring a week’s stay at an NYC condo, a day of kayaking on the Wakulla River & Judaic woodworks, as well as many, many local items from local artists, restaurants etc.  The last 30 minutes of the event will feature a live auction.

There is room for only 150 people at this event. So please RSVP to ncjwtallahassee@gmail.com or phone 850.765.8458.  You will receive a confirmation e-mail.

Coming Up:

Ritual Vice President Andrea Caufield invites any adults or young adults who would like to participate in the March 7 Purim service by singing a few short verses in Hebrew, to learn the melody with Andrea.  We will be singing in small groups and Andrea will be singing along with us.  So be brave and join us in this fun learning experience and keep our traditions alive.  Andrea will teach the melody on the following Sundays:  February 12th, 19th, 26th, and March 4th from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Shomrei Torah.  Please call Andrea Caufield at 329-6394 (evenings) to sign up.

Wednesday, Feb. 22:  Due date for hamantaschen orders (order form to be found in Shomrei Torah bulletin or at the synagogue)

Sunday, Feb. 26:  Camp Shalom Kick Off, 12:30 at Temple Israel.

Shomrei Torah Religion School will close at noon that day so our children can participate!

Wednesday, Feb. 29:  Due date for Mishloach Manot orders (order form to be found in Shomrei Torah bulletin or at the synagogue)

Thursday, March 1:  At 7:30 p.m., Shomrei Torah will host Dr. Rivka Amado for a musical performance and educational program on Ladino music and Sephardi culture.  Dr. Amado, based in Berkeley, has performed at numerous venues, and will be accompanied by local jazz phenom, Zach Bartholemew.  A reception will follow the program. You can learn more about Dr. Amado at www.Rivkamusic.com.   (In addition, Dr. Amado will meet with our Religion School students on Wednesday evening, Feb. 29.)

Friday, March 2: Rabbi Jordan Hersh will visit Shomrei Torah.  At 6:30 p.m., we’ll have a pot-luck picnic dinner outside in Shomrei Torah’s back yard.  Please bring either a pareve (non-dairy / non-meat dish) or dairy dish to share (no meat, please), and we’ll enjoy everyone’s cooking in the great outdoors.  It is permissible to bring food prepared in a non-kosher kitchen. Please label dishes that are dairy, for the benefit of those who cannot eat dairy products.  No desserts, please (we have a delicious dessert oneg after services!)  Don’t worry about the weather – we have hired a tent in case of rain.

Sunday, March 4: Annual Purim Carnival.

Wednesday, March 7:   We invite everyone to join in the celebration of Purim at 7:00 p.m. and to hear the reading of the Megillah.  Please wear your costumes and join in on the fun.  The service will be short and child-friendly, with an ice cream social to follow.

Sunday, March 11: Annual Jewish Food and Cultural Festival featuring Shomrei Torah’s fantastic falafel booth!

Friday, Feb. 3:  Rabbi Aderet Drucker returns!  Erev Shabbat services, led by Rabbi Drucker, will begin at 8:00 p.m., and will be followed by an Oneg Shabbat sponsored by Bob and Karen Asher Cohen, in honor of their daughter Ashley’s birthday.

Saturday, Feb. 4:  Shabbat morning services, featuring a D’var Torah by Debbie Kleinman-Robinson, will begin at 9:30 a.m., and will be followed by a Kiddush lunch sponsored by Susan Bodell and Bob Weinberger, in honor of the third anniversary of the Five Bats’ Bat Mitzvah.  Following services, Rabbi Drucker will conduct a study session.

Sunday, Feb. 5:  Sunday School at the usual times.  Adult Education class taught by Rabbi Drucker beginning at 10:00.  Ritual Committee meeting at 11:15.

A reminder that Sunday School will celebrate Tu B’shevat during Sunday School on Feb. 5 and Sunday School will start at the usual time of 9:30 and end at 12:45 as scheduled.
